Following recent series of violent attacks on bus drivers on the Gold Coast, Transport Workers Union and Transit Australia Group has recently awarded a contract to Karen Armstrong of Safety Strategies to implement violence prevention training for Surfside bus drivers.

In their daily work, bus drivers are dealing with a minority of passengers, road users and other people who behave aggressively. Safety Strategies unique training system for “Dealing Professionally With Aggressive Behaviour” provides a full range customer service and personal protection skills to prevent, avoid and defuse aggressive behaviour. Physical defence is considered a last resort, and drivers will be taught to use protection skills within a legal and professional framework.

A recent interview with Bernadette Young of ABC Radio Gold Coast’s Drive program conducted on 5th March 2012 further addresses the issues surrounding bus drivers and useful tips on how to protect yourself when confronted with a threatening situation.
